HAPPY AND HEALTHY CHICKENS
We have a barnyard mixture of colorful egg laying hens that are fed with a fantastic organic layer and/or grower feed (depending on the season) from Scratch and Peck Feeds, and supplement with oyster shells, fresh grass, weeds, grubs, bugs and kitchen scraps. While our main goal in raising chickens is to provide our own family with the freshest, most nutritious eggs possible, we often find ourselves with a heavy surplus in the spring and summer months, and have decided to begin listing our extras for sale to help cover the costs of feed.
EGG HANDLING PRACTICES
We collect eggs from our hens daily, and sometimes multiple times per day, to ensure freshness. We refrain from washing unsoiled eggs whenever possible in order to keep the bloom intact. The bloom is the the outermost protective coating of an egg, and when left in place, will preserve freshness and nutritional value far longer than if the eggshell is washed or rubbed too vigorously.
Most grocery store eggs in the United States are washed before they reach the store, which means their shelf-life and nutritional value is affected and they must be refrigerated. However, if this protective coating from the hen remains intact, the eggs can stay fresh for up to 3 months on the counter at room temperature, and even longer in the refrigerator. We do recommend rinsing your eggs with warm water and drying them off before using, but only just before cracking them open for this reason.
If the eggs we collect are overly soiled and we have to wash them for any reason, which tends to occur more often in the rainy months, we will inform you and label the carton as such so you know they require immediate refrigeration.
